Kornit Digital develops manufactures and markets industrial and commercial printing solutions for the Garment, Apparel, and Textile industries. Kornit AMT (Additive Manufacturing Textiles), will be developing exciting chemistries, that will be integrated into Kornit’s flagship products, to provide an expanded set of capabilities to Kornit’s ever-expanding customer base.

Kornit AMT headquarters, in Somerville, MA, is looking for a passionate, truth-seeking individual who aims high and is audacious in their vision of what can be accomplished with new technologies. We are looking for an individual driven by the desire to have an impact, with a “get it done” attitude.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lead material development project(s) focused on new formulations for digital printing for apparel, footwear and other textile applications.

o Demonstrate ability to quickly learn fundamentals of new chemistry and apply that knowledge towards designing an experimental plan.

o Develop formulations with desired elastomeric properties and tune cure kinetics and adhesive properties within Kornit’s inkjet process and curing windows

o Optimize new formulation to meet application-specific needs with an eye towards a smooth transition from proof of concept to volume production

o Collaborate in scale-up and production efforts with suppliers, partners, and Kornit Corporate headquarters in Israel

• Get hands dirty making, testing and analyzing new material formulations while also contributing to other projects within the Chemistry group.

• Help position Kornit AMT’s material offerings to be economically viable while meeting or exceeding performance targets set for properties, reliability, and shelf life.

• Provide timely updates to management, assess technical risks, and propose strategies to mitigate risk while managing deliverables and timelines.

• Explore new ideas, evaluate the existing IP landscape, and identify opportunities to strengthen Kornit’s IP – take a lead in developing a case for patenting novel approaches.

Required skills:

• Engineer or formulation chemist with a PhD. in materials science, chemistry, or fields related to polymers.

• Experience in silicones, silanes, polyurethanes, moisture cure resins is strongly desired.

• Capable of independently managing your own project as well as work on team projects.

• Strong communication skills, both written and oral. Able to make compelling presentations to senior management within Kornit.

• Self-motivated and hands-on.

• Scientific rigor in planning and executing of the experimental plans.

• Proven ability to establish a network with external suppliers and consultants to minimize the amount of time required to proof of concept in new projects

• Able to multi-task on several projects in parallel.

• Adept at literature review, analyzing the technical and commercial landscape of new chemistry.

  

Preferred skills:

• At least 2-3 years of experience in formulating chemistries for targeted applications.

• Good understanding of surface chemistry and interfacial interactions between layers of different chemical compositions. Able to troubleshoot and tune interactions to optimize adhesion and cohesion.

• Strong understanding of analytical tools commonly used in characterizing ink performance

• Knowledge of rheological characterization and how to tune rheological properties such as viscosity, yield stress, and recovery time.

• Able to work in a multidisciplinary environment and communicate effectively with other departments within the company including articulating chemistry requirements to other disciplines.

• Exposure to scale-up and shelf-life testing.

• Strong collaboration skills to effectively work in a close-knit, dynamic and fast-paced organization.

• Comfortable wearing many hats.

• Proactive in taking on responsibilities.

• Able to contribute to a positive innovative company culture.
